The rare Mongolian Hircus goats are renowned for producing some of the highest quality cashmere fibre in the world. The unique Mongolian climate which seems dramatic fluctuations in temperature throughout the year, rising about 40°C in summer and dropping below -40°C in winter, results in the natural growth of the goats’ beautifully downy under coat. The crimp of the cashmere fibres helps them to interlock during the manufacturing process and allows them to be spun into very fine, light weight fabrics.

Mongolia has historically been a natural habitat for cashmere goats. With its natural grasslands and cold climates, the region provides the perfect formula for raising goats to produce one of the world’s finest fibers. It takes four goats to produce enough fibre for a single cashmere sweater, whereas a single sheep can produce enough wool to make up to five woolen sweaters. Cashmere has therefore traditionally been considered a luxury fibre, however today casual cashmere products are widely available and affordable. The increase in the global demand for cashmere and resulting increase in the goat population is destroying the grasslands of Mongolia.

Gobi Cashmere is fully committed to our environment and preserving the luscious grasslands of Mongolia. We are working with partners including the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA) in supporting on-the-ground efforts in Mongolia to begin reversing the desertification that has taken place.

The most sustainable and humane way of harvesting the cashmere is to gently hand-comb it from the goat, and GOBI Cashmere ensures that this method is always used. GOBI Cashmere respects ‘FAIR TRADE’ and as such we cut out any unnecessary intermediaries in the production process to preserve the fair price that herders get for their cashmere.
